![]() ![]() "I have been enthralled with this book! it is a great read, by and author who should rival any of our top writers in this genre. In fact, I'm feeling a little paranoid that those of us who've read this book now know too much and will soon be the subject of a little "cleanup in aisle 3". Not with this book, I feel as if this is the author's life. Often when I read a great thriller, I feel as if I'm in the hands of an experienced author who has done thorough research. White Americans are “still trapped in a history which they do not understand” and thus need to look inside themselves for their own freedom to attempt to be like the white man would be an act of self-sabotage. He goes on to advise James that they should not endeavor to mimic the ways of white Americans in hopes of acceptance or integration. He writes that James has been given this lot because he is black “and for no other reason.” In facing this fact, Baldwin emphasizes that they must love themselves all the more, must hold steadfast to one another and love themselves fiercely. This innocent country set you down in a ghetto in which, in fact, it intended that you should perish. ![]() ![]() In just a few pages, Baldwin expresses a deep and fatherly love towards his nephew while still conveying the grim reality of their circumstance: In the first and shorter essay, Baldwin writes a letter to his nephew, also named James. The Fire Next Time is a collection of two essays, both which read somewhat like mementos of memoir, and so after having learned more about his mother and his life growing up in Harlem, I found these essays even more powerful. After reading The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation by Anna Malaika Tubbs ( read my review here), I had the inclination to read something by James Baldwin. ![]() ![]() ![]() The deeper into the book you go, the more the suspense and pace builds, and I’m glad to say that the ending didn’t disappoint either. The opening line, spoken by Erin, is ‘Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?’ and a couple of pages later we discover that the grave being dug is her husband’s. ![]() However when they come across a suitcase full of cash whilst honeymooning in Bora Bora, and decide to keep the money, they get drawn further and further into a dark underworld of crime and twists and turns.Ĭatherine grabs the reader’s attention from the very start. They’re young, madly in love, and have a bright future ahead of them. Erin is an up-and-coming filmmaker, and Mark an investment banker. It’s the story of a young couple who seemingly have it all. There were several nights during that week when I was awoken by a crying Jenson at 3am: when he was placated by his dummy I needed no other excuse to jump into the spare bed and devour another chapter. Ok so I didn’t read it in one sitting, but it only took me a week or so. Which is something I haven’t done since pre-kids. But as I knew it was written by Catherine Steadman, actress from The Inbetweeners (one of my guilty pleasures) and Downton Abbey no less, I was intrigued and keen to give it a whirl. So when I first caught sight of this one I was dubious: thrillers aren’t usually my genre of choice. I know it’s silly, but I always judge books by their covers. ![]() ![]() Sounds familiar, right? You might have watched “ABNKKBSNPLAko?!“ or Aba Nakakabasa Na Pala Ako” movie in mind in such set up. The exposition kicks off in a classroom setting on the first day of class where each student is asked to introduce themselves before the class. Romance is already a “given” in the mainstream Philippine Cinema, yet Jason Paul Laxamana, the writer and director of the movie took a subtle detour from what’s already too cliché. However, as each scene reveals, the story line begins to show its peculiar taste that goes beyond mediocrity. As you start watching its Exposition, not to mention considering the title of the movie, you would surely conclude that “ 100 Tula Para Kay Stella”, an Independent Film and an Official Entry to the Pista ng Pelikulang Pinoy is another movie that promotes poetry, second to “ Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa”. “Simple but cute” is how the Professor described the first poem that Fidel wrote for Stella which is more or less the same description you can give to the movie itself. ![]() ![]() ![]() The holidays are the icing on the cake for bakery owner Hannah Swensen.
